my favorite webtoons
last updated: february 24, 2021

First of all, what are webtoons?
To put it simply, webtoons, a term originated in South Korea, and refers to webcomics that read top to bottom. There is also an app under the name Webtoon where readers can browse different stories (it's also where the webtoons I'll be talking about can be found.)

*this list is unranked + beware of possible spoilers!

Seasons of Blossom by Hongduck and Nemone
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama, Slice-of-Life
Setting: High School and College

Seasons of Blossom is a very heartwarming story that has 4 seasons and in each season, the main characters are different. For example, the spring season focuses on two high school students who have a crush on each other while the summer season focuses on two people who've lost the same person to suicide. And while this might seem complicated and off-putting as the main storyline and main characters do change, the cast and setting stay the same. I find this setup very cool because most of the webtoons I've read so far only focus on one perspective, so to experience so many different ones in the same universe is a first for me. The characters are also always connected to each other in some way, whether it be because of past or present relationships. I really like this structure because it makes me realize how complicated relationships can be and that there's always more to people than what you can see. I also appreciate how Seasons of Blossom is able to showcase sometimes taboo themes like grief, bullying, and depression in a gentle and realistic way. I always read the most recent updates as soon as they're posted and I can't wait to see how the fall season will unfold!

Pyramid Game by Dalgonyak
Genre: Drama, Thriller, Action
Setting: High School

Pyramid Game is a story that revolves around new transfer student, Suji, and how she plans to overthrow the harmful ranking system and social hierarchy that's been implemented in her class. I enjoy reading about Suji because she's a very strong and calculating protagonist who's always on her toes and thinking two steps ahead of everyone. And it's not just her who's extremely brilliant, her whole class is made up of girls who all have their own unique traits and abilities that allow them to have an edge over one another. It's very interesting seeing the dynamic Suji has with the girls who decide to join her side, especially when Jaeun's gentle nature clashes with Suji's unforgivingness. While Suji is admirable for her smarts, she's also selfish which sometimes makes liking her hard, but I think that's the beauty of this webtoon since it always shows two sides to every character. Reading this webtoon keeps me on the edge of my seat because I never know if Suji's plans have succeeded or if the antagonists have found a way to block her advances.

The Makeup Remover by Lee Yone
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Setting: College-ish?

The Makeup Remover is a story that revolves around photography major Yeseul Kim who participates as a model in a makeup competition. Throughout the webtoon, Yeseul challenges the ideas of beauty by playing with different concepts and learning that physical attributes shouldn't define someone. The story is full of light-hearted and comedic scenes but it also spreads positive messages like self-love and tackles issues such as misogyny, the sexualization of children, and manipulative relationships. Not only that, little tips about makeup are actually weaved into the story, helping to educate readers on topics they might not have known about. This is why I love this webtoon so much. It's so much more than a surface-level romance story that centers itself around conforming to beauty standards, but rather the discovery and appreciation of inner beauty while still not bashing the use of beauty products. There's also a lot of character development even within minor characters so I think it's awesome how the author took so much time to create such aa multi-dimensional story. I also really enjoy seeing all the different looks and concepts the contestants come up with so this story is just a happy balance of good art and good plot.

See You in My 19th Life by Lee Hey
Genre: Romance, Drama, Fantasy, Supernatural
Setting: Adulthood

See You in My 19th Life is a story that revolves around Jieum, a girl who remembers all of her past lives, and her journey of reconnecting with Seoha, the boy she liked from her past life. Along the way, the two try to uncover the past and find out who was behind the tragic car accident that killed Jieum. To be honest, I don't really know why this webtoon sticks out to me so much but I'm always reading the most recent episodes the moment they're released. I've read another story by the same author so I guess I really like their style of art and storytelling. The main character Jieum is also very likable as she's cool and collected, but also very cute when she wants to be. The interactions between her and Seoha are also very fun to read about because there was a big buildup about whether she should reveal her secret about past-lives to him. I honestly really enjoy reading mystery novels so the fact that they're trying to uncover the past also has me very intrigued.
