And now I will proceed to rant about my favorite anime...
Gintama
By: Mandy Wang
Watching Gintama for the first time is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The story takes place in the Edo period, where an alien race known as the Amanto have taken over after failing to be stopped by Japan's samurais. In an effort to prevent another rebellion, the Amanto have banned all swords in public areas. The main character
of this story is Sakata Gintoki, a former samurai with silver hair who still carries a wooden sword around with him despite there being bans. (the sword also dispenses soy sauce in case you wanted to know) He runs an odd jobs business called the Yorozuya along with his associates Kagura (very macho) and Shinpachi (glasses) where they "try" to
help people with whatever problems they might have. While on these jobs, they encounter a variety of people and creatures, ranging anywhere from terrorist groups to alien royalty.
If that premise sounded interesting at all, just wait, there's more. No amount of plot summaries can encapsulate the absurdity that is Gintama. It is something that has to be watched to truly understand its greatness.
Gintama stands as one of, if not the greatest, comedy animes of all time. Even though most of its comedy is targeted towards Eastern audiences, the wide variety of references and absurd humor it has is bound to
make anyone laugh. It includes a large amount of parodies, which could include anything like Will Smith and Donald Trump, almost as if the show completely disregards copyright.
However, it's not just comedy. Gintama practically includes every genre out there (and that's not even that big of an exaggeration). It has its serious moments and story arcs
as well, and transitions seamlessly from its comedic moments and more emotional scenes. A lot of this is due to Gintama's wide cast of characters which are all lovable and stupid in their own way, each adding on to the show.
In short, you will reach the pinnacle of human existence by watching Gintama. Yes it is that good. I could go on to talk about specific scenes but that would take too long and I've already put more thought into this than my
Euro lit paragraph assignment. |
